Teller County Fire Causes Evacuations; Fires Near LaJunta Continue to Burn

June 9, 2011

A fire in Teller County has grown to 50 acres, according to the county's website. Residents and animals in the Navajo Mountain Mesa Subdivision have been evacuated. Fourmile Community Church is currently the temporary evacuation shelter. No structures are currently affected, but Bear Trap Ranch subdivision is on standby for evacuation. Fifteen agencies have responded from Teller and Park Counties, in addition to the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.

Two fires are burning about 40 miles south of LaJunta. The Pueblo Chieftain reports the fires are along Colorado route 109. Smoke could be seen from LaJunta yesterday, and by last night, the Shell Fire had burned about 20,000 acres. The smaller Brice Fire was 90% contained, again, as of last night.
