One woman is dead and another seriously injured after a disturbance at a state prison in southeastern Colorado Monday morning. KRCC's Eliza Densmore reports.

The incident at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility in Crowley resulted in the death of one female kitchen worker and the wounding of another. A press release from the Colorado Department of Corrections says the incident occurred during early morning breakfast preparations. The injured staff member is currently hospitalized.

The facility houses about 1,000 male prisoners and as of mid-afternoon Monday was still on lockdown for investigation. At least one suspect has been identified.

Governor John Hickenlooper released a statement offering condolences to the families and co-workers of the victims. He’s expected to visit the region this afternoon. The Colorado Department of Corrections declined to comment further for this story.
