Even though temperatures reached near freezing across much of the Front Range last night, other parts of the state are seeing fire activity. KRCC’s Elizabeth Schoder reports.

A wildfire burning north of Rifle on the Western Slope reported Wednesday afternoon continues to burn at 500 acres. Strong winds caused the flames to push into the nearby forest, and steep and rugged terrain means fire crews are mainly attacking the blaze by air.

No homes are immediately threatened. The cause of the fire is under investigation but a local fire chief says it was likely human caused. Another fire continues to smolder east of there.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department has local fire danger levels at low.
