Pueblo Seeks Perspective on Food Access, Health Perceptions

Food access is getting a closer look with the help of a new survey from the Pueblo City-County Health Department. KRCC’s Eliza Densmore reports.

The survey asks about access to healthy food, transportation to stores, and what kinds of food people buy. It’s part of a larger effort called the Health Disparities Program that looks at inequity within the Pueblo area food system. Public Health Educator Christina Hopewell is helping to coordinate the project.

"So far from the data we’ve seen that there are 10 different areas within Pueblo County that have low access to healthy foods. There are 42 percent of Pueblo County residents that do not have access to a supermarket or grocery store within 1-10 miles of their home."

The overarching goal of the project is to reduce factors that lead to chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The survey is available through May 17th.
