EPC Sheriff Faces Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa is facing allegations of inappropriate behavior, including creating a hostile work environment and sexual discrimination.  Several department commanders say the sheriff had affairs with three subordinates, abused those who questioned the alleged relationships, and removed all oversight of the department's $60 million budget.

The claims were reported in Friday’s Colorado Springs Gazette, and stem from a complaint submitted to county commissioners this month by three of Maketa’s commanders.

El Paso County Commissioners released a statement acknowledging they received the complaint. The statement also said the Board issued notice days later that an independent investigation would be launched.

Maketa denies the allegations, and threatened legal action if the paper published them.
