CU-Boulder graduate Kate Brown becomes Oregon’s governor

University of Colorado Boulder graduate Kate Brown was sworn in as Oregon's new governor on Thursday. She graduated in 1981 and is the first openly bisexual governor in the United States, notes the university.

Brown succeeds Gov. John Kitzhaber, who announced his resignation after people began questioning whether his fiancée improperly benefited from her personal relationship with him.

As secretary of state, Brown was the first in line for the governor's office after Kitzhaber resigned, reported the New York Times. She served in the Oregon state legislature for 17 years before seeking statewide office.
