A Denver police officer seriously injured during a student protest in December will be released from the hospital Wednesday.

Officer John Adsit has been hospitalized since Dec. 3, the police department tweeted.

Adsit was injured while monitoring students from East High school as they marched down Colfax Avenue. They were protesting the decision not to prosecute a police officer who killed an unarmed black man in Ferguson, Missouri last year.

Adsit underwent 11 surgeries and began breathing on his own in January.
