Rock work to delay I-70 traffic in Idaho Springs all week

Delays on Interstate 70 are expected all week as workers remove loose rocks along the highway in Idaho Springs.

From Monday through Friday, traffic will be stopped for up to 45 minutes as crews use handheld tools to remove loose rock from two cliff walls above the highway. Anchor bolts and mesh will be installed to prevent rock slides from reaching the road.

The work will be done between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday but only through noon on Friday.

It's part of a project to convert the shoulder of I-70 between Empire Junction and Idaho Springs into a tolled express lane that can be used during busy travel times.
