Colorado State University officials say their sheep mascot who died the morning before a major rivalry game did so of natural causes.

The Coloradoan reports that CAM the Ram had been sick for a week before dying Saturday. A substitute had to be sent in for CAM at the Rocky Mountain Showdown with the CU Buffaloes.

Associate professor of animal sciences Kraig Peel says CAM's breed, Rambouillet sheep, usually live to be 6 to 8 years old.

CAM was the 24th Rambouillet to serve as mascot. He served for four years and was 6 years old.

CAM 24 was replaced by CAM 25, who officials say has the right temperament and personality to be mascot. The new mascot is not related to CAM 24.
