SW Colorado Schools Struggle To Keep Buses Running

Parents in Durango are scrambling to get their children to school as a shortage of bus drivers has some routes canceled.

The Durango Herald reports that six of 22 bus driver positions are vacant in Durango School District 9-R. Mechanics and district administrators have stepped in to drive some routes, but those substitutes have created new problems trying to keep busses on the road.

Programs in Ignacio and Bayfield are also looking to fill driver positions, canceling routes in the meantime.

District officials are offering paid training and benefits for full-time drivers and are currently looking for three part-time drivers to help stem delays.
