How Denver-Area Arts Groups Split Millions In Science And Culture Funds

If you visit a museum, see a stage production, or listen to an orchestra around the Denver metro, there’s a good chance you helped pay for it.

Of course, you purchased a ticket. But hundreds of organizations have also benefited from a cultural tax that’s been in place for nearly three decades.

Since 1989, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District has distributed revenue from a 0.1 percent sales and use tax to the tune of more than $850 million. For more insight into how SCFD works, check out CPR’s past coverage.

Last year, those funds amounted to more than $54 million split among about 270 organizations. But those millions in tax dollars will be at stake this year.

This November, the SCFD will ask voters in seven counties whether to extend the cultural tax. Voters have approved an extension twice before -- in 1994 and 2004.
