Report: Pilot Made Mayday Call Before Plane Crash Near Buena Vista

A preliminary report on a small plane crash near Buena Vista has found that the pilot was heard making a mayday call over his radio before he went down.

The report from the National Transportation Safety Board released Monday still doesn't provide any answers as to what caused the July 4 crash. The board said in its findings that the woman who received pilot Jay Jones' emergency declaration reported that he didn't elaborate on the problems he was facing.

The Denver Post reports 63-year-old Jones was the only person onboard the plane when he crashed in a field about 4 miles from the Buena Vista airport. Witness had reported hearing the aircraft's engine sputter before the plane went down.

Jones had departed from the Lake County Airport in Leadville.
