A Colorado Couple Wrote A Musical About The Ups And Downs Of Parenting

There’s a new musical about raising children written by a Longmont couple. Its title refers to warfare, which parenting can feel like: “In The Trenches.” The songs have humorous lyrics about bodily fluids that nod to Gilbert and Sullivan along with tender moments about a father’s love for his children. Husband and wife Graham and Kristina Fuller wrote “In The Trenches” because they didn’t think there were enough stories being told about parenting. They stage it later this week in Denver.

The Story Behind The Burroughs & Their Newest Music

One of Colorado’s most prominent bands was only supposed to play one show. Singer Johnny Burroughs got together with a horn section from the University of Northern Colorado and played that show in 2013. He’s never really stopped. The Greeley band — now called The Burroughs — makes dance music that evokes classic soul and funk acts like James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic. The band’s four-part horn section complements Johnny’s buoyant vocals and energetic stage presence. The Burroughs will perform in Beaver Creek, Denver and Fort Collins later this month. Johnny Burroughs and saxophonist Briana Harris join us to talk about the band’s story and their newest music.

The Denver musician and producer and his rotating cast of musicians are preparing to release the band’s sophomore album, “Remember That Cool Thing We Did,” later this year via Dualtone Records. We got a sneak preview of the record when South of France came into our studio for a performance and interview with Alisha Sweeney.

Meet The Colorado Man Who Went From Teaching High School Orchestra To Composing Symphonic Works

An orchestra director at Windsor High School announced earlier this year that he would leave to pursue a full-time career as a composer. During his five years at the school, Chris Pilsner, a Fort Collins native, tripled the size of the music program. His students traveled across the U.S. and Europe with him performing his original music. Before he left, he gave his students a memorable parting gift. An orchestral piece written as a tribute to them.
