Event Description

Filipino fashion and culture comes to the mountains as Salida Creativity Lab presents FILIPINO MODERN in scenic Salida, Colorado. Join us for a day of inspiration and creativity featuring two events on October 18. Funded in part by an Arts in Society grant, for projects that "illustrate artistic commitment, broaden the understanding of the role arts play in society, demonstrate cross-sector work, exhibit cultural relevance, foster community engagement, and present opportunities for shared learning."

The first is a free daytime event from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with hands-on activities, crafts, music, and dance by Salida Creativity Lab; and a reading of the children’s book The Little Chairs about treasure and growing up in the Philippines, written by Jazmin Parcon Sandoval and illustrated by Brynn Ronning Sandoval.

Then in the evening, Filipino/Asian- N. American artists present art, music, fashion, and food. The visionary lineup of artists includes Gene Pendon, creator of the 30 storey mural landmark mural of Leonard Cohen for the city of Montreal; a fashion show by stylist Shiela DeForest of Denver’s Amihan Artisans featuring sustainable textiles and weaving from the Philippines; Julius Garrido, award winning photographer and collaborator with Denver's LBGTQ community; Eddie Sandoval chef and owner of The Asian Palate and concert manager for The Surf Hotel; as well as an elevated Kamayan Dinner on banana leaves catered by Chef Katie Fisco’s Baon Supper Club of Colorado Springs. The evening ends with a one of a kind music event featuring Money Mark (aka the 4th Beastie Boy) from LA with Austin's DJ Jester the Filipino Fist of SXSW fame.
