Unbelievably Deep: Chronological Assessment of Hells Midden (5MF16)
Thursday, April 6 at 7:00 PM Pueblo Heritage Museum, 201 W. B Street in Pueblo.
Spencer Little presents recent archaeological research on the Hells Midden site, located in far northwestern Colorado in an area with abundant Fremont archaeology (dated from 1500 to 800 years Before Present).
Hells Midden is somewhat unique in the area for containing multiple pre-Fremont deposits. The site was originally excavated over four field seasons in the 1940s by the University of Colorado. This presentation will detail the history of field research at Hells Midden and offers radiocarbon ages for the deposits.
Hells Midden exhibits evidence of intensive occupation, agriculture, and reduced mobility. The research uses a regional perspective to understand when and why the indigenous occupants of Northwestern Colorado chose to adopt more sedentary lifeways.
