Event Description

An enigma – something that is puzzling, hard to understand, not what it appears to be, finds itself at the heart of these three pieces on this program. Stacy Garrop’s Thunderwalker, as she explains, is centered around an enigmatic, “huge, god-like figure who lives in the sky and whose footsteps fall loudly among the clouds.” By contrast, Glière seems to trick listeners by alluding to late 19th-century romanticism, though he wrote the concerto in the mid 20th century (this will be played by harp fellow Abigail Kent). Elgar, having centered the entire work around the “enigma,” wrote this music for people in his close circle, virtuosically shifting and transforming the music to fit different personalities.
