House calls in the 1930s were a fairly common practice for doctors in the United States. Just 13 percent of doctors made house calls regularly in 2013, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Last week, a Denver company called Dispatch Health began sending not doctors, but nurse practitioners, to homes in the metro area. The company says it can treat many of the calls that 911 emergency operators would otherwise get. Dr. Mark Prather is the company's CEO. He spoke to Colorado Matters host Nathan Heffel.

Editor's note: In the audio to the story, Aurora Hunt is incorrectly identified as a "nurse." She is a "nurse practicioner."
