In August of 1934, a lanky African-American pitcher named Satchel Paige put on memorable performance for baseball fans in Denver. He'd come to play in the annual Denver Post Tournament, which attracted some of the country's best semi-pro teams... and-- until then-- had only allowed white players. Well, Paige—now considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time—ended up stealing the show at Denver's Merchants Park baseball stadium... striking out 44 batters in 28 innings. According to Larry Tye, that 1934 tournament helped pave the way for the integration of Major League baseball 13 years later. Tye is the author of Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend, just out in paperback. He speaks with Ryan Warner.
