Rarely Seen Gull Touches Down In Colorado

· Dec. 3, 2010, 8:57 am

People usually have to travel above the Arctic Circle for a glimpse of the Ross's Gull.  But just before Thanksgiving, one turned up at Cherry Creek State Park south of Denver, identified by Joe Roller, Glenn Walbek and Cole Wild. Birders came too, from all across the country.   Ross's Gull is almost never found in the Lower 48, so Colorado's lone, long-distance flyer offered what could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see it. Denver author Mark Obmascik wrote about the thrill of spotting new species in "The Big Year". He talks with Colorado Public Radio's Mike Lamp. Photo: Glenn Walbek
