Colorado will provide this year’s U. S. Capitol Christmas Tree. The tree comes from White River National Forest in Northwest Colorado, near the town of Meeker, and it begins its journey today. KRCC’s Kate Dunn reports.

The U.S. Forest Service along with co-sponsors Choose Outdoors and the Colorado Tourism Office will present the tree to the Capitol as a gift from the state. The selected tree is an Englemann Spruce standing at 73-feet-tall with a 28-inch trunk diameter.

This year will be the third time Colorado has provided the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. The tree will tour the state and make various stops throughout the country on its way to Washington D.C., where it’s expected to arrive November 26th.

The tree will ultimately reside on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, where it will be decorated with ornaments made by Colorado children.
