A Fort Carson police bill passed unanimously in the state senate earlier this week. The bill would provide a new classification and more training to officers at the Mountain Post. KRCC’s Katherine-Claire O’Connor reports.

The bill would essentially streamline enforcement for Fort Carson’s non-military police force. Currently, they have to involve El Paso Country Sheriff’s Department in civilian matters. Republican Senator Kevin Grantham of Canon City is sponsoring the bill, and says this will help the police force run more efficiently.

The police force will continue to function solely on the grounds of Fort Carson. And it’ll just help them with their interaction with the surrounding police departments.

If passed, the bill would not change police jurisdiction, but the officers would be allowed to moonlight for other nearby police forces. The bill now moves to the House.
