Watch: An inspirational rap set to Mozart’s ‘Rondo Alla Turca’
Parents: I feel your pain.
We know we should introduce our kids to classical music. Every parenting magazine or online article espouses the benefits of music in their lives.
We understand having our child learn an instrument reaps countless rewards, including better test scores and happier dispositions. (It also has the side benefit of keeping them off their iPods for a little while.)
But sometimes kids act like listening to classical music is about as pleasurable as losing a molar. Why listen to a big orchestral piece that’s 10 or 15 minutes long when they can sing along to a three-minute Katy Perry tune?
Likewise, Mozart takes time to appreciate, while the catchy tunes of Maroon 5 are all on the surface.
No one knows this better than music teachers who struggle every day to try to meet kids on their level while introducing them to great music.
Hats off to a high school music teacher and the rapper Mac Lethal for this ingenious way to reach kids. It all began with this letter:
Dear Mr. Mac Lethal
My name is Mrs. Francine, I'm a 53 year old high-school music teacher, and I love your YouTube videos. The problem is, I can't play them for my students because they contain too many bad words. Would you consider making a fast rap video for my students, to inspire them to be great? With no bad words?
p.s. Do you like Mozart?"
So if you have a kid who would rather listen to Eminem than Mozart, play this for them.
