Pentagon Team Scouts Colorado Sites For Gitmo Prisoners

The Pentagon says the visits are informational and no sites have been selected. The military needs an alternative to Guantanamo as part of any plan to close the detention center in Cuba because some prisoners who would remain in custody.

Navy Cmdr. Gary Ross says the team will evaluate facilities at the Federal Correctional Complex in Florence, Colorado, and the state penitentiary in Canon City. Pentagon spokesman Ross said the survey would take place Tuesday through Thursday. Congress would have to approve moving them to the U.S.

The U.S. holds 114 prisoners at Guantanamo, about half of whom have been cleared for release.
