Colorado Springs On Pace For One Of Its Most Violent Years In A Decade

Police in Colorado Springs are investigating 13 shootings in the last two weeks -- three of those victims are dead. The city has seen 26 homicides so far this year, which is on pace to be among the highest numbers in a decade, officials say.

"Unless you're seeing a trend of gangs or something, a lot of murders that occur are individuals who know one another," said Colorado Springs Lt. Howard Black.

This comes at a time when Mayor John Suthers acknowledges needing to hire more police in Colorado's second largest city.

Suthers has said he hopes to add another 120 or so officers to the force within a year. That is largely dependent on voters next week approving a storm water fee that would free up $20 million in city money to hire more officers, among other outlays.
