- The deadline for the first marijuana tax funded scholarship in Pueblo is fast approaching, but there haven’t been many applicants yet. The scholarship is funded by an excise tax on marijuana cultivation in Pueblo County that passed in 2015. The funds total $25,000, which will be awarded to 25 recipients in $1,000 increments.
- Southeast Colorado received some much needed precipitation after experiencing some pretty dry conditions. This most recent spring storm brought several inches of rain to south central and southeast Colorado, most of it over this past weekend. This comes as a welcome relief after a period of dry conditions across the region.
- Law enforcement is stepping up efforts this weekend as part of a statewide crackdown on distracted driving. Colorado State Troopers will be out in extra force as part of distracted driving month. While distracted driving is mostly considered cell phone use, it can include eating, putting on make up, or shaving, among other things.
- A planning grant totaling more than $80,000 was recently awarded to the Southern Colorado Economic Development District for creating jobs in Southern Colorado. The economic development group serves 13 counties in Southern Colorado. Although the organization applies for the grant every year, it also reassesses the needs of the region every five years.
- The Great Backyard Bird Count is underway, and Saturday it’s taking place at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. The bird count is a worldwide event to help take stock of birds in wildlife parks for fun and for science. “Essentially it’s a giant citizen-scientist project,” says Jeff Wolin, with the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.
- The Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs is set to reopen Monday after being closed for over two months. The clinic closed in November after an attack by an armed gunman left three dead and others injured. The building sustained heavy damage to the entrance and interior, and repairs are ongoing.
