Some may note that Colorado Women’s Day is later in the year for 2021. International Women’s Day is always March 8. However, in order to allow time for greater distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines, the event has been moved this year to the Friday, May 7. “We will remain ready to take some or all components of Women’s Day ‘virtual’ if necessary,” said event founder and chair Deborah Deal-Blackwell, APR. “However, we are hoping that by moving it – just for this year – to the Friday before Mother’s Day, we will be buying some time for more people to get one of the available vaccines so that attendees can enjoy getting together.

The Colorado Women’s Day celebration is an official International Women’s Day event and will be found on the international website at: https://www.internationalwomensday.com/Events.

History
This is the sixth year that International Women’s Day has been celebrated in Colorado. In many countries around the world, this is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political. International Women's Day first emerged at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe and the first time it was observed nationally in the U.S. was in 1909. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in 1945, was the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men. The United Nations’ theme for their women’s initiative is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.” The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day event is “Let’s All Choose to Challenge.” #ChooseToChallenge
