Mostly Involuntary Servitude

by Diane L. Richard

Sometimes, in order to emigrate, able-bodied individuals became indentured servants. Though many of these arrangements were seemingly by choice, most were not as people either found themselves "between a rock and a hard place," or effectively had no other option. Let's explore some historical context and the databases that can help us identify whether those we are researching were indentured or not.
