Drunk or drugged driving? Training Colorado law enforcement to know the difference

The scenario plays out every day: An officer pulls someone over who’s driving erratically. But, while the officer suspects the driver is under the influence, the question is: under the influence of what? Alcohol is relatively easy to determine, but what if it’s marijuana? Cocaine? Methamphetamine? Or, might there be an underlying medical condition?

This week and next, the Colorado Department of Transportation is training officers from across the state to differentiate among the different types of impairments. At the end of the course, the officers become certified drug recognition experts.
