Voting at the Arapahoe County Administration building on Prince Street in Littleton on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020. On Monday, police ordered two men, one of whom was armed and carrying a video camera, away from the building.

It sounds like the plot of a political thriller: two conservative operatives are recruited to spy on Democratic activists in the West. Their mission: infiltrate these circles and gather potentially damning information on Democrats and moderate Republicans to weaken their chances in 2020. The thing is: this really happened. The story of Beau Maier and Sofia LaRocca’s attempts to undermine Wyoming politics ran in the New York Times and has Colorado connections. Pulitzer Prize-winner Adam Goldman is one of the reporters who wrote the story.
