Flood Awareness Meetings in the Pikes Peak Region

April 8, 2013

The Pikes Peak Region is focusing on flood preparations for residents of El Paso County and Colorado Springs near the Waldo Canyon burn area. KRCC’s Martha Perez-Sanz has more.

County officials plan to hold town-hall style meetings at Ute Pass Elementary School on the 8th and 9th for residents of Green Mountain Falls, Chipita Park, and Cascade.

El Paso County Commissioner Sallie Clark says the ground under the Waldo Canyon burn zone is cement-like, unable to absorb rainwater and snowmelt.

"We know that water runs downhill, and if you live in a downhill area, where you may never have seen flooding in the past, but now the whole geology of our entire watershed on the north side of Highway 24 has really changed because of the fire and because of the burn area."

City officials have scheduled a meeting for Pleasant Valley residents on April 11th at Glen Eyrie. The city also plans to distribute sandbags to homeowners on April 13th at the Verizon Wireless building.
