The Ludlow Massacre’s 100th anniversary is next year. As KRCC’s Eliza Densmore reports, a new panel will look at how to commemorate it.
In April of 1914, over 20 people died when the Colorado National Guard attacked striking miners. It’s known as the Ludlow Massacre and was a catalyst for labor rights in the early 20th century.
Commission member Robert Butero is a regional Director of the United Mine Workers of America. Butero says they’re tasked with reflecting on the massacre’s modern day impact.
"We want to have an open discussion as far as like immigration, work place safety, labor rights, issues that were prevalent in them days and how today those have either been adjusted or remain unsolved."
A collection of scholars, former miners, and other officials make up the commission. Events are expected to start in September.
