A new report says emergency notification systems failed to reach all residents during the Waldo Canyon Fire. KRCC’s Martha Perez-Sanz has more.
The El Paso-Teller County E911 Authority attempted more than 118,000 emergency notifications. At least 6,000 didn’t get through, specifically in the Chuck Wagon area.
The report says while the original Communicator! NXT Server had known limitations, a second system activated for the fire failed to work as expected. While the systems themselves fell short, the report also assigns a variety of reasons for the issues, including power interruptions and cellular congestion.
The E911 Authority says it's reviewing the adequacy of emergency notification systems.
Former Colorado Public Utilities Commission chief engineer Gary Klug wrote the After Action Report for the El Paso-Teller County E911 Authority.
