The comments came during a press conference Monday when asked about the high number of COVID-19 related fatalities in the county. Local officials have taken issue with the governor’s assertion.
- After reviewing the facts surrounding the August 3, 2019 shooting of a Colorado Springs teenager, the FBI says his death was not a violation of constitutional rights. 19-year-old De’Von Bailey was shot by two Colorado Springs Police Officers following a report of a robbery. Body camera footage showed officers questioning Bailey and another man.
- A group of medical students is holding a donation drive for personal protective equipment or PPE in Colorado Springs. All donated supplies will go to El Paso County Emergency Management for distribution to local health care professionals as part of nationwide effort to redirect unused medical supplies.
- The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is changing the way it conducts traffic stops in an effort to protect both officers and the public as the outbreak of the new coronavirus continues. In a typical traffic stop, the officer comes to the driver’s side of the vehicle and asks for license and registration.
- The remains of an 11-year-old boy missing from Colorado Springs may have been found in Florida. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says they were contacted by authorities near Pensacola, Florida on Wednesday about the discovery of a deceased juvenile. An autopsy performed there tentatively identified the remains as those of Gannon Stauch.
- El Paso County Health officials say a man in his 40s with a recent travel history to California is the first presumptive case of coronavirus in the county. The announcement comes one day after Governor Jared Polis reported the first two cases in the state. There are now eight as of Friday afternoon.
